JAKARTA-— Three national judges have decided that 9 of the best works by Indonesian children will take part in an international drawing competition, The 6th International Loving-Peace Art Competition (ILPAC), held by a women’s organization, the International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG), in South Korea. The three judges, Ni Ketut Ayu Sri Wardani, Supriyanto a.k.a Sentot Season, and Defvi Kurniawati Wijaya, screened hundreds of drawings from various cities in Indonesia. In the initial stage, the top 10 were selected, each in the elementary, middle, and high school categories. Then, 3 drawings were selected from each to be sent to Korea and will be judged by international judges.
The nine works, each in the elementary school category, were the works of Amelia Christine from Bogor, Merindu Halimah Beauty from Jakarta, and Damia Aqilah Arrad from Sidoarjo. The Junior High School category is Priyanka Chopra from Jakarta, Hilmi Susilo Wahyudi from Jakarta, and Roderick Xavier Yusuf from Medan. The Senior High School category is the work of Kennard Dwiandra Putra from Tangerang, Claudia Kim Laurence from Tangerang, and Kiera Maulida Otoole from Salatiga.

In this competition, special awards were also given to two children with special needs who participated in the competition, namely participants from Salatiga, Luftiana Nur Afifah, a high school student and from Mataram, Ali Akbar, a high school student. According to the jury, Sentot, children with special needs are extraordinary children. Despite their limitations, they did not give up, but tried to remain peace-loving and become ambassadors of peace for Indonesia in their own way.
They conveyed a message to friends who were affected by the war, through their drawings. “We, the jury and IWPG give our highest appreciation. We hope that for next year’s competition, other friends with special needs can follow in the footsteps of Luftiana and Ali Akbar,” he said.
Love Letter
The Chairperson of IWPG Indonesia, Ana Milana Puspitasari hopes that the children’s enthusiasm is not only for the competition, but can also become ambassadors of peace. “You are all winners by expressing your love for peace through drawings, not just looking for winners. What you think and feel in a picture is a victory for you,” she said. It is said that if someone is selected and their work is sent to Korea, it is a pleasure, but if they are not selected, do not immediately suffer. “Our children’s drawings are love letters to our brothers and sisters who are sad because of the war, who have not been able to feel peace. Your works will be exhibited and published in books, distributed to libraries, schools, and other institutions, so that your works can be enjoyed by many people,” said Ana.
Jury Representative, Defvi Kurniawati Wijaya said that several criteria were considered by the jury, namely aesthetics or beauty of the work, coloring, neatness, and how to convey ideas and creativity in the work, original or not, and suitability with this year’s theme. “It must be depicted that the participant’s work conveys a love letter to our friends, with a peaceful heart, which is delivered to friends who are suffering because of the war. Our friends out there are suffering. Our work is a message from our hearts. How to fight for peace. From this theme, the starting point for the jury to see the participants’ works,” she said.
It is said that the jury gathered in Bandung. There were many works that were assessed, and it was difficult to determine the top 10 let alone the top 3. “We needed a long discussion. Usually it was finished by noon, at that time it was until the afternoon,” she said. “The drawings are beautiful. We are amazed to see the works of Indonesian children. All are impressive and amazing. We have chosen the best of the best. If there are works that have not been sent to Korea, do not be sad, because you are already winners, because your works have conveyed a message of peace,” she said. ***
